When do we do a root canal? What are the indications for the root canal?
- Sensitivity: When the patient complains of severe sensitivity to hot and cold that lasts for a longer period, then we advise for the root canal treatment.
- Deep Cavity: when there is a deep cavity that involves the pulp but the patient does not have the pain, that means the nerve is dead. In such cases we advise for the root canal.
- Trauma leads to sensitivity: when there is trauma for the front teeth, it leads to the exposure of the nerve and the sensitivity. In those cases we advise for the root canal.
- Swelling: when there is huge swelling associated with the tooth, that means there is pus below the root. In such cases, multiple-visit root canals are advised to save the tooth
- Root Canal Infected Again: when the root canal was done previously but it is reinfected, in such cases we do the root canal.
Is a crown/cap needed after root canal treatment?
It has two reasons: First: after a root canal, a tooth becomes weakened. A cap reinforces weakened teeth after RCT.
Second: prevention of root canal recurrence through sealing. A cap ensures a long life for teeth, and the root canal becomes successful and minimizes the risk of infection after RCT.
How long is the time period required for root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment is completed in three steps: the first removes tooth decay and opens the veins, the second removes stains and cleans the veins, and the third step is dental filling. But some dentists do this procedure in one single day, which increases the failure of root canal treatment. So for better results, complete this procedure in three visits; in case of infection or abscess, two more visits may be needed.
Instructions or Tips after Root Canal Therapy
First: Medication:
We usually prescribe some painkillers and antibiotics for our patients after root canal therapy. So hence, we would like our patients to religiously take these medications after the root canal is done. Because root canals are done with anesthesia, the anesthetic pain and the injection pain could be there for a day or two, and these painkillers would actually help them to comfort them.
Secondly:
We ask our patients not to bite something hard on the tooth that is being treated. The reason being the tooth can be very brittle, and it can even fracture if you have something very hard. So wait until you get proper permanent restoration on that particular tooth.
Third is: We instruct our patients to keep very good oral hygiene. These can help them the treatment done smoothly and recover very quickly and
Finally, fourth is that we suggest our patients go on a soft diet. Soft diet will help in to heal very smoothly and quickly.
Tooth turned black after root canal?
As for the discoloration of the tooth after root canal treatment, it is also possible but only if there is some remaining nerve tissue inside after the treatment. Tissue can turn black and make the appearance of the tooth darker, but with proper treatment and complete removal of tissue, normally the tooth doesn’t turn black after root canal treatment.
Amalgam or Composite—Which material is used in which cases?
Amalgam It is extremely hard, but it can only be used in the back teeth because it is in the silver-colored composite, which is a tooth-colored filling that can be done in the aesthetics zone, which is the front teeth.
Amalgam mechanically bonds to the tooth, i.e., it is retained in the mechanical cavity, but the composite is used with the bonding agent, which is attached to the tooth surface. So for the amalgam, we need to prepare larger cavities to retain the amalgam in the cavity. For the composite, it can be done in very small cavities. The third thing is the aesthetic purpose in the anterior zone. In the aesthetic zone we cannot use the amalgam because it is a silver-colored material, but the composite can be used anywhere. So according to the cavity, according to the location, and whatever the dentist suggests, you always go for that storage.
